Located in northern/inland Morocco, Fes is the second largest city in Morocco with a population of over 1.2 million. It is considered the spiritual and cultural hub of Morocco and the second holiest city in the Islamic faith, after Mecca. Fes was the Imperial City three more times as various dynasties rose and fell. The medina is renowned as one of the most perfectly preserved cities in the world.
Meknes was founded in the 11th century as a military settlement. Surrounded by high walls with large doorways, the city currently blends 17th-century Islamic and European styles.
